Are you thinking about getting  a new boiler for your home but don’t know where to start? Hopefully this article will help you.

What is a combi boiler and should I go for it?

More than half of the boilers which are installed in Britain are combi boilers. These boilers combine and that is why they are called “Combi”. They combine a highly efficient water heater and a central heating boiler.

Hot water for domestic purposes is produced directly from the boiler. The water enters the boiler as cold or warm and leaves the boiler as hot directly to the tap.

The central heating system works by using the hot water circulated by the boiler to the radiators via a sealed circuit. However the domestic water is given priority, so when a tap is used the boiler gives priority to the hot water tap and then to the central heating.

The greatest advantage of a combi boiler is that there is no need for storage tanks or cylinders which can take up valuable space at home. Combi boilers are not the ideal solution for larger homes because they cannot cope with many hot water outlets. For bigger houses it is better to use a regular boiler.

What is a regular boiler?

A regular boiler supplies the central heating system  directly with the water to the radiators and back again. The water for the taps is heated indirectly in the hot water cylinder by using a coiled heat exchanger.

The primary system is supported by an expansion tank with an overflow. The secondary system for hot water is topped up by the cold water cistern in the loft. This is used by most homes in the UK.
